Dehradun: In a rare and stern directive, District Magistrate Savin Bansal ordered two sons accused of assaulting their widowed mother to publicly apologize by touching her feet, warning that failure to do so would result in their expulsion from the district under the Gunda Control Act.
The case came to light when Vijay Laxmi Panwar, a widow from Banjara Wala, approached the district administration alleging that her sons routinely beat her, demanded money, and threatened to kill her while under the influence of alcohol. Living in constant fear, she sought protection from the authorities.
Administration Steps In
Taking the complaint seriously, the district administration conducted a confidential inquiry. Neighbors and local representatives confirmed the mother’s ordeal, prompting officials to initiate proceedings under the Gunda Control Act. The move jolted the sons into realizing their responsibilities.
In court, both sons tendered an apology, pledged to abandon alcohol, and swore not to repeat acts of violence against their mother. The administration’s tough stance, coupled with the mother’s silent suffering, forced them to confront the gravity of their actions.
Court Accepts Apology
Following their written undertaking, the court accepted the apology and halted further proceedings, noting improvement in their behavior. However, the DM made it clear that the administration would maintain a zero tolerance policy towards harassment of women, widows, and vulnerable groups.
“Any recurrence will invite strict action,” Bansal emphasized, underscoring the administration’s commitment to safeguarding the dignity and rights of women.
