Sacred Gates of Shri Badrinath Dham to Open on April 23


Dehradun: The portals of Shri Badrinath Dham will open for devotees on Thursday, April 23, at 6:15 am, marking the beginning of the Char Dham Yatra season this year. The traditional Gadu Ghada (oil urn) Yatra will commence on Tuesday, April 7.

As per age-old tradition, the auspicious date for the opening of the shrine’s doors was formally decided on Basant Panchami, on Friday, January 23, at the Tehri Royal Court in Narendra Nagar. The religious proceedings, organised by the Tehri royal family, began at 10:30 am with customary rituals.

In the presence of Maharaja Manujyendra Shah, the royal priest Acharya Krishna Prasad Uniyal, after detailed Panchang calculations and examination of the Maharaja’s birth chart, formally announced the date for the opening of the shrine’s portals, following Vedic rites. With the declaration of the opening date, the schedule of the Gadu Ghada oil kalash procession was also finalised.

Prior to the announcement, representatives of the Shri Dimri Religious Central Panchayat ceremonially handed over the Gadu Ghada oil kalash to the royal court, continuing a tradition that has been followed for centuries.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including MP Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah, Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) Chairman Hemant Dwivedi, Rawal Amarnath Nambudiri, BKTC Vice Presidents Rishi Prasad Sati and Vijay Kapruwan, and Chief Executive Officer Vijay Prasad Thapliyal, along with temple committee members, priests, religious functionaries, administrative officials, and representatives of the Dimri Panchayat. A large number of devotees were also present on the occasion.

The formal announcement has set the stage for preparations for the annual pilgrimage to Lord Badri Vishal’s shrine, nestled in the Himalayas, with thousands of pilgrims expected to visit the sacred temple during the upcoming yatra season.
