Dehradun: Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital has achieved a landmark breakthrough in breast cancer treatment by successfully reconstructing an entire breast using the patient’s own tissues after a total mastectomy. This marks the first such advanced procedure in Uttarakhand.

The complex surgery was performed under the leadership of senior cancer surgeon Dr. Ajit Tiwari, who carried out a total mastectomy with autologous whole breast reconstruction on a woman suffering from multi-centric breast cancer—a condition where multiple cancerous growths develop in different parts of the breast, making partial surgery impossible.

The five-hour-long operation involved meticulous reconstruction using the patient’s own muscles and skin, ensuring natural shape, balance, and texture. Traditionally, silicone implants have been used for such procedures, but they often carry risks of infection, implant failure, hardness, pain, and the need for repeat surgeries.

Dr. Tiwari explained, “Autologous reconstruction significantly reduces complications associated with implants. The breast looks more natural, retains better sensitivity, and offers long-term safety.” He emphasized that the surgery demands exceptional expertise, including deep anatomical knowledge and advanced micro-surgical skills, available only at select medical centers in India.

Medical experts note that this technique is especially promising for younger women who wish to lead a confident, normal life after cancer recovery. Beyond physical healing, reconstructive breast surgery plays a vital role in restoring mental health, self-esteem, and social confidence.
