Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital surgeons Removes Rare 12.5 Kg Breast Tumor, Give Patient New Lease of Life
Dehradun: Doctors at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital have successfully removed a massive 12.5 kilogram phyllodes tumor from the breast of a 35-year-old woman, restoring her health and confidence. The rare case highlights how ignoring a small lump can escalate into a life-threatening condition.
The complex four-hour surgery was led by Dr. Neelkamal Kumar, Head of the Breast Surgery Department, who ensured the tumor was excised while preserving the natural contour of the breast. The patient, who had endured severe pain, breathing difficulties, and social isolation due to the football-sized growth, was discharged just three days after the operation in stable condition.
Dr. Kumar explained that phyllodes tumors are rare but can grow rapidly compared to ordinary lumps. Their nature—benign or malignant—can only be confirmed through biopsy. In this case, the patient delayed seeking specialist care due to fear and lack of awareness, opting instead for homeopathic and Ayurvedic remedies. The lump expanded dangerously within weeks, causing physical and psychological distress.
The surgeon emphasized that phyllodes tumors carry a high risk of recurrence, making timely diagnosis, expert surgical intervention, and regular follow-ups essential. “Such cases must be handled under the supervision of breast specialists to minimize risks and ensure long-term recovery,” he said.
The hospital’s super-specialist breast unit has become a referral center for complex cases, often treating patients who arrive after failed surgeries elsewhere. Experts from ICAR, CSIR, and other institutions note that advanced facilities like those at Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital are crucial for tackling rare breast conditions.
This successful surgery not only saved the patient’s life but also underscored the importance of awareness, early detection, and specialized care in managing breast health.
