Uttarakhand Launches District Ranking System Based on SDG Indicators; Champawat Tops First List

Dehradun, Dec. 20: Acting on the directions of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Uttarakhand has introduced a monthly district ranking system to evaluate development performance against Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators. In the inaugural ranking, Champawat district secured the top position with 96 points, followed by Bageshwar (94) and Nainital (92).

The initiative, implemented by the Centre for Public Policy and Good Governance (CPPGG) under the Planning Department, assessed 11 SDGs through 39 indicators between April and October this year. Officials said the rankings will be updated monthly to monitor progress and encourage districts to meet targets in a time-bound manner.

Special Officer Amit Punetha of CPPGG noted that districts lagging behind are expected to achieve the set goals during the remainder of the financial year. He added that additional indicators may be incorporated in future to reflect evolving priorities.

Chief Minister Dhami congratulated the top-performing districts and urged all officials to intensify efforts. “Effective planning and timely execution of schemes are essential to improve living standards and achieve holistic development. Districts must focus on areas where improvement is needed,” he said.

The SDGs, adopted by 193 UN member states in 2015, aim to eliminate poverty, hunger, disease and deprivation by 2030. They encompass four key dimensions: social equity, inclusive economic growth, environmental protection, and peaceful, inclusive societies.

Uttarakhand has emerged as a frontrunner in implementing these ambitious goals. In the NITI Aayog’s SDG India Index 2023–24, the state ranked first nationally, underscoring its commitment to sustainable development.
