Dehradun: Uttarakhand's uncompromising campaign against examination fraud received another major boost with the arrest of an assistant professor accused of leaking a Uttarakhand Technical University (UTU) semester examination paper, reinforcing Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's pledge to eradicate the examination mafia and protect the future of the state's youth.
The latest action is being seen as another milestone in the Dhami government's sustained crackdown on paper leak syndicates, a campaign that has transformed examination integrity into one of the state's most prominent governance priorities.
Acting on a complaint filed by UTU Controller of Examinations Dr Vinay Kumar Patel, Dehradun Police arrested Ashish Kumar Gupta, an assistant professor at Shivalik College of Engineering, Jhajra, for allegedly circulating key examination questions through a WhatsApp group ahead of the university's even-semester examination conducted on July 8.
According to the complaint registered at Prem Nagar Police Station, university authorities found significant similarities between the questions circulated before the examination and those appearing in the final question paper. An internal inquiry by the university further confirmed that identical questions had been shared through WhatsApp groups and other digital platforms before the examination began.
Following directions from the Senior Superintendent of Police, investigators collected electronic evidence and arrested the accused. Police are now examining seized digital devices and investigating whether a larger network was involved in the alleged leak.
The arrest reflects the expanding scope of the state's anti-cheating drive, which initially focused on recruitment examination scams but is now being extended to university examinations to ensure fairness across the education system.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reiterated that his government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy against anyone attempting to compromise the integrity of examinations.
"Whether it is a recruitment examination or a university examination, those involved in cheating, question paper leaks or breaching the confidentiality of the examination process will not be spared," the Chief Minister said.
Since assuming office, Dhami has consistently projected the fight against the examination mafia as a defining governance priority, arguing that paper leaks not only undermine public confidence but also rob deserving candidates of fair opportunities.
One of the government's most significant reforms has been the enactment of Uttarakhand's stringent anti-copying law, widely regarded as one of the toughest anti-cheating legislations in the country. The law provides for stringent penalties against those involved in organised examination fraud and has become the cornerstone of the state's efforts to restore credibility to public examinations.
According to the state government, the ongoing campaign has so far led to the arrest of more than 100 members of examination mafias and their associates, reflecting an aggressive enforcement strategy aimed at dismantling organised networks involved in recruitment and academic examination fraud.
The latest arrest demonstrates that the government's campaign is no longer confined to recruitment agencies but now encompasses the broader academic ecosystem, sending a strong message that any attempt to manipulate the examination process will invite swift legal action.
For thousands of students across Uttarakhand, the continuing crackdown represents more than a law enforcement exercise—it is an effort to rebuild trust in the examination system and ensure that merit, rather than malpractice, determines success. With each fresh action, the Dhami government is seeking to reinforce its commitment that the future of the state's youth will not be compromised by those seeking to profit from academic dishonesty.
