Uttarakhand Battles Deforestation and Climate Crisis

Dehradun, November 10

key points-

  1. Severe Forest Loss: Uttarakhand has lost nearly 278 sq km of forest cover in the past five years due to urbanization, infrastructure projects, and recurring forest fires, threatening biodiversity and ecological stability.
  2. Rising Climate Threats: The state faces an increasing number of climate-induced disasters such as flash floods, landslides, and cloudbursts, with average temperatures rising by 0.8°C over the last two decades, accelerating glacier retreat.
  3. Human Pressure and Urban Strain: Unchecked construction and unplanned urban growth in areas like Joshimath, Mussoorie, and Rishikesh have intensified land subsidence and weakened the Himalayan terrain.
  4. Need for Sustainable Action: While initiatives like Mission Van Dhan and Catch the Rain Campaign are underway, experts stress that strict regulation, eco-friendly development, and public participation are vital to preserving Uttarakhand’s fragile environment.

Even after 25 years of its foundation, Uttarakhand continues to battle severe environmental challenges. Once celebrated as the pristine “Devbhoomi” for its lush forests, sacred rivers, and majestic Himalayas, the state is now grappling with an alarming ecological crisis. Rampant deforestation, erratic weather patterns, and recurring natural disasters have cast a long shadow over Uttarakhand’s fragile environment and sustainable future.

According to data from the Forest Survey of India (FSI) 2023, Uttarakhand has lost nearly 278 sq km of forest cover in the past five years, particularly in districts such as Dehradun, Pauri Garhwal, Almora, and Nainital. Much of this deforestation is attributed to expanding urbanization, infrastructure projects, and forest fires—some of which are man-made.

Environmentalists warn that this rapid depletion of green cover is aggravating the impacts of climate change. According to the information based on the  research done by environmentalist Dr Ramesh Rawat -  “Deforestation not only disrupts biodiversity but also reduces the state’s natural resilience against floods and landslides.”

In recent years, Uttarakhand has witnessed a surge in climate-induced disasters — including flash floods, cloudbursts, and landslides. The 2021 Chamoli disaster and recurring floods in Kedarnath valley serve as stark reminders of the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also reports a rise of nearly 0.8°C in average temperature in the hill regions over the last two decades, contributing to glacier retreat and changing rainfall patterns.

Unchecked construction along riverbanks and hill slopes has further weakened the terrain. Experts caution that unplanned urban growth in towns like Mussoorie, Rishikesh, and Joshimath — where land subsidence recently displaced hundreds of families — reflects the cost of ignoring ecological limits.

Adding to the crisis, forest fires have become a seasonal menace. In 2024 alone, more than 1,100 fire incidents were reported, destroying over 1,400 hectares of forest area, according to the Uttarakhand Forest Department. These fires not only devastate wildlife habitats but also release massive carbon emissions into the atmosphere.

To combat these growing threats, the state government has launched several initiatives such as the Catch the Rain Campaign, Mission Van Dhan, and community-based afforestation drives. However, experts emphasize that long-term solutions lie in strict regulation of construction, promotion of eco-tourism, and public participation in conservation.

As Uttarakhand marks 25 years of its formation, its greatest challenge remains clear — protecting its fragile mountains and forests from the very development that threatens to erase their essence.

If urgent and coordinated action is not taken, the “Land of the Gods” may soon find its divine beauty fading under the weight of human neglect and climate change.
