Centre Extends CUH Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar's Tenure by One Year


MoE Recognises Leadership That Elevated Central University of Haryana's Global Standing

Mahendergarh: The Ministry of Education, Government of India, has approved a one-year extension in the tenure of Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar as the Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Haryana (CUH), Mahendergarh, recognising his leadership in transforming the University into one of the country's emerging centres of academic excellence.

The extension was approved by the Hon'ble President of India, in her capacity as the Visitor of the University, under the provisions of the Central Universities Act, 2009. According to Prof. Suneel Kumar, Registrar, the extension will take effect from July 28, 2026, for a period of one year, or until the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor or further orders, whichever is earlier. The order was issued by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, on July 20, 2026.

The extension comes in recognition of the University's remarkable progress under Prof. Kumar's leadership across academics, research, innovation, infrastructure, global rankings and community engagement.

During his tenure, CUH has successfully implemented the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, strengthening multidisciplinary education, research-driven learning, industry-academia collaboration and skill development. The University has also expanded its academic partnerships through numerous Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with leading national and international universities, research institutions and industries.

One of the University's most significant achievements has been its growing international recognition. CUH made its debut in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, securing a place in the 1001–1200 global band, while also entering the QS World University Rankings 2026 in the 1001–1100 band for the first time. The University also earned distinction among India's leading institutions in the Citations per Paper indicator and secured a place in the 301–350 band of the THE Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026. It also performed strongly among Central Universities in the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) rankings.

Research and innovation have witnessed unprecedented growth during Prof. Kumar's tenure. The University has secured research grants worth several crores from national funding agencies while significantly strengthening its Centre for Innovation and Incubation, startup ecosystem, patent generation and technology development initiatives. Faculty members and researchers have made notable contributions in areas such as healthcare, biotechnology, environmental sciences, agriculture, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

The University has simultaneously undertaken extensive infrastructure development, establishing world-class facilities including a Synthetic Athletics Track, advanced scientific laboratories, an E-Mobility Laboratory, environmental research facilities and modern library infrastructure, providing students and researchers with an enhanced learning environment.

Beyond academics, CUH has expanded its social outreach through initiatives focusing on environmental conservation, rural development, women's empowerment, health awareness, digital literacy, cyber awareness, cleanliness, yoga and drug de-addiction, with active participation from the National Service Scheme (NSS), National Cadet Corps (NCC) and various academic departments.

Expressing gratitude for the extension, Prof. Tankeshwar Kumar thanked the Hon'ble President of India, the Ministry of Education and the entire University fraternity for their continued trust and confidence.

"This extension is a recognition of the collective dedication and hard work of the entire University family," he said, reaffirming CUH's commitment to achieving new milestones in quality education, impactful research, innovation, global competitiveness and socially relevant higher education.

He also acknowledged the contributions of the University's faculty members, officers, non-teaching staff, students, research scholars, alumni and partner institutions, expressing confidence that their continued support would enable the Central University of Haryana to further strengthen its position among India's leading institutions of higher learning.
