Pediatric Surgery Awareness Drive Held at HIMS Jolly Grant on Children’s Day

Dehradun, January 01, 2026: On the occasion of Pediatric Surgery Day, an awareness campaign was organised at the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS), Jolly Grant, with the aim of educating people about congenital disorders and surgical conditions affecting children from birth to 18 years of age.

As part of the campaign, Professor and Unit Chief of Pediatric Surgery Department, Dr Santosh Kumar, Pediatric Surgeon, interacted with patients and attendants visiting the Out Patient Department (OPD) and sensitised them about various congenital and acquired surgical problems seen in children. He explained that pediatric surgical conditions broadly fall into two categories—congenital anomalies present at birth and problems that develop later in life.

Dr Kumar emphasised that parental awareness is the first and most important line of defence. “Timely recognition of symptoms and early decision-making can prevent lifelong disability in children,” he emphasized.

Highlighting common congenital conditions, he informed that disorders such as imperforate anus, abnormal connection between the food pipe and windpipe, hernia, urinary anomalies like hypospadias, abdominal tumours and stones require specialised surgical care. He urged parents to consult a qualified pediatric surgeon for any suspected symptoms or abnormalities in children.

Dr Santosh Kumar further stated that Himalayan Hospital is fully equipped with modern facilities to manage all types of pediatric surgical conditions. Advanced infant and pediatric laparoscopic procedures, as well as the treatment of complex cases, are routinely performed at the hospital with encouraging clinical outcomes.

The awareness drive underscored the importance of early diagnosis and specialised surgical intervention in ensuring healthy growth and a better quality of life for children.
