A Third Term for Dhami on the Horizon?
Haridwar/Dehradun: Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s high-profile visit to Haridwar has triggered intense political discussions in Uttarakhand, with observers interpreting the event not merely as a government celebration but as a strategic move ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The visit, marked by organisational meetings and a large public gathering, has also revived speculation about whether Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami could lead the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) into the elections for a third consecutive term in power in the state.
Shah addressed party leaders and workers during a BJP organisational meeting in Haridwar, urging them to expand the party’s base and strengthen contact with grassroots workers in preparation for the upcoming election year. Party leaders said Shah’s message focused on organisational consolidation and ensuring that MPs and MLAs engage directly with the public and party cadre.
A Political Signal for 2027?
The timing of the visit is significant. Uttarakhand will go to polls in 2027 to elect the 70-member Assembly, where the BJP currently enjoys a strong majority. In the 2022 elections, the party secured a comfortable mandate, defying the state’s long-standing trend of alternating governments every five years.
Political observers say Shah’s presence in Haridwar and his praise for the Dhami government’s work could be interpreted as a signal that the BJP high command may continue backing Dhami as the party’s face in the next election. In Indian politics, central leadership visits often serve to test organisational strength and gauge public sentiment before major electoral battles.
Dhami’s Rising Profile
Since assuming office in 2021, Dhami has worked to position himself as a decisive and youthful leader in the hill state. Under his leadership, the BJP returned to power in 2022 with a strong mandate, breaking the historical pattern of regime change in Uttarakhand. His government has emphasised infrastructure development, cultural identity, and administrative reforms.
The state administration also showcased its development agenda during Shah’s visit, highlighting ongoing projects and initiatives ahead of major events such as the Ardh Kumbh preparations in Haridwar and other infrastructure works in the region.
Political Equations Within the BJP
Within the BJP, Dhami’s leadership has gained traction among the party’s younger cadre and organisational base. However, Uttarakhand politics has historically seen multiple power centres. Senior leaders and former chief ministers remain influential in shaping the party’s internal equations.
Analysts believe Shah’s visit was aimed at ensuring unity within the organisation and preventing factionalism ahead of the elections. Political activity in several regions of the state has intensified in recent months, reflecting internal manoeuvring as parties begin preparing for the next electoral cycle.
Opposition Attacks
The opposition Congress, however, dismissed Shah’s visit as a political exercise aimed at praising the BJP government rather than addressing pressing issues in the state. Congress leaders alleged that concerns such as unemployment, migration from hill districts, law and order, and corruption were not adequately discussed during the visit.
Congress leaders also attempted to mobilise protests during the visit, signalling that the party is preparing to sharpen its political attacks as the election approaches.
A Crucial Political Moment
For the BJP, Uttarakhand remains strategically important in North Indian politics. The state has traditionally seen alternating governments, and retaining power for a third consecutive term would mark a significant political milestone.
Shah’s Haridwar visit therefore carries broader political significance. Beyond reviewing government achievements, it appears aimed at testing the political ground and consolidating organisational strength ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Whether Dhami ultimately becomes the BJP’s face for a third consecutive term will depend on multiple factors—electoral performance, party unity, and public sentiment in the coming months. But for now, Shah’s visit has undeniably intensified political speculation and set the stage for what could be one of Uttarakhand’s most closely watched elections in recent years.
