PM Modi’s 28th Uttarakhand Visit: Focus on Mega Infrastructure, Energy Push and Tourism Boost
Dehradun: Uttarakhand is preparing to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the 28th time on Tuesday, a visit that underscores his sustained engagement with the hill state. Notably, this will be his 18th visit during Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s four-and-a-half-year tenure, reflecting the Centre’s continued focus on the region’s development.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate two landmark projects—the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway and India’s first 1,000 MW variable speed pumped storage plant in Tehri—both expected to significantly transform connectivity and energy infrastructure in northern India.
Mega Projects to Reshape Connectivity and Economy
The 213-km Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, built at an estimated cost of Rs 11,963 crore, is set to reduce travel time between Delhi-NCR and Dehradun to nearly 2.5 hours. The six-lane access-controlled corridor includes advanced features such as Asia’s longest 12-km wildlife corridor, elephant underpasses, multiple bridges, tunnels, and interchanges, ensuring minimal ecological disruption while enhancing connectivity.
Officials believe the expressway will provide a major boost to tourism, trade, and regional mobility, particularly benefiting the Char Dham Yatra by improving access to pilgrimage routes.
In addition, the inauguration of the Tehri pumped storage plant marks a significant milestone in India’s renewable energy journey. Developed by THDC, the project forms part of the 2,400 MW Tehri Hydro Power Complex and will enable efficient power generation by utilising water flow between upper and lower reservoirs. Experts view it as a game-changer for grid stability and clean energy integration.
Deep Spiritual and Developmental Connect
Since becoming Prime Minister in 2014, Narendra Modi has maintained a strong spiritual and developmental connection with Uttarakhand. His first visit in September 2015 to Rishikesh included meeting his spiritual mentor, and since then, he has undertaken multiple visits to Kedarnath, Badrinath, and other sacred sites.
His repeated visits to Kedarnath, particularly after the 2013 disaster, have been instrumental in reviving the shrine and promoting it as a major pilgrimage destination. Similarly, his visit to Adi Kailash in Pithoragarh and the winter seat of Goddess Ganga at Mukhba helped popularise winter tourism in the state.
Infrastructure Push Under Modi Government
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami emphasised that Uttarakhand has witnessed unprecedented development under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, with projects worth over Rs 2 lakh crore approved and implemented. These include the Char Dham All-Weather Road Project, Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail line, Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib ropeways, and expansion of air connectivity.
The state government believes these initiatives have significantly improved accessibility in remote hill regions, strengthened disaster response infrastructure, and opened new avenues for tourism and local employment.
Public Enthusiasm and Preparations
The Prime Minister’s visit has generated considerable excitement among residents, with the state administration making elaborate arrangements for the inauguration events. Security, traffic management, and logistical planning have been intensified to ensure smooth conduct of the programme.
Officials also highlight that Uttarakhand has consistently showcased its cultural identity during such visits, presenting the Prime Minister with traditional artifacts, local products, and symbolic representations of the state’s heritage.
A Strategic Visit
Beyond inaugurations, the visit is being seen as a strategic push for Uttarakhand’s long-term development, combining infrastructure expansion with sustainable energy goals. Analysts note that improved connectivity, coupled with renewable energy investments, could position the state as a key hub for tourism, hydropower, and regional economic growth.
As Uttarakhand prepares for yet another high-profile visit, the focus remains firmly on translating these projects into tangible benefits for its people while maintaining the delicate balance between development and environmental sustainability.
No Toll at Lachhiwala, Asharodi Barriers Removed for PM Modi’s April 14 Visit
In view of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on April 14, the district administration has announced that the Lachhiwala toll plaza will remain toll-free from 5 AM to 8 PM, with FASTag charges also suspended. Barriers at Asharodi will be removed to prevent congestion, as heavy vehicular movement is expected for the event at Jaswant Singh Ground.
Top Officials on Alert Ahead of PM Modi’s Dehradun Visit
Senior officials in Uttarakhand conducted a comprehensive on-site inspection to review preparations for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Dehradun. Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan, along with Director General of Police Deepam Seth and other senior administrative officers, assessed arrangements from Dat Kali Temple to Mahindra Ground in Garhi Cantt.
During the inspection, the Chief Secretary directed authorities to ensure tight security arrangements and instructed officials to prepare a robust traffic management plan to ensure smooth movement across the city during the visit.
