Clean Kumbh 2027: Rs115 Crore Approved

Dehradun/Haridwar: With millions of pilgrims expected to converge on the banks of the Ganga during the Haridwar Kumbh Mela in 2027, preparations for one of the world's largest religious gatherings have received a major boost. The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has approved a comprehensive sanitation and public health management plan worth Rs115.61 crore, aimed at transforming the mega event into a cleaner, safer, and more environmentally sustainable pilgrimage.

The approval was granted during the 70th meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Mission for Clean Ganga, marking a significant step in the state's efforts to ensure that faith and cleanliness go hand in hand during the grand congregation.

Mega Infrastructure for a Mega Gathering

The centrally funded project, titled "Integrated Sanitation, Solid and Liquid Waste, and Public Health Management Plan," seeks to create a robust sanitation network capable of handling the enormous influx of devotees.

Under the plan, authorities will establish 13,915 toilets, 8,065 urinals, and 2,000 bathing units across the Kumbh Mela area to provide hygienic facilities to pilgrims.

The sanitation drive will also include 4,840 dustbins, over 31 lakh liner bags, and 491 waste collection vehicles to ensure efficient waste disposal and prevent littering across the sprawling fairgrounds.

Technology Meets Tradition

In a move aimed at modernizing event management, the project includes the development of a cloud-based monitoring dashboard that will enable real-time supervision of sanitation and waste management operations.

Officials believe the digital platform will help authorities track cleanliness standards, respond quickly to emerging challenges, and coordinate resources more effectively during the event.

Focus on Environmental Protection

The plan goes beyond routine cleanliness measures and includes provisions for advanced waste management infrastructure. Facilities such as transfer stations, a faecal sludge treatment plant, and a gas-based crematorium will be established to ensure environmentally responsible disposal and treatment of waste.

Additional equipment, including ghat-cleaning machines, fogging units, spraying machines, tractors, grass-cutting machines, PPE kits, and first-aid kits, will be deployed to maintain hygiene and public health standards throughout the festival period.

Dhami Welcomes Approval

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami welcomed the approval, stating that the sanctioned funds would significantly strengthen sanitation, waste management, public health systems, and monitoring mechanisms during the 2027 Kumbh Mela.

He expressed gratitude to the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti and the National Mission for Clean Ganga for supporting Uttarakhand's preparations for the internationally renowned religious gathering.

Faith, Sustainability and Scale

The Haridwar Kumbh Mela attracts devotees from across India and around the world, placing immense pressure on civic infrastructure and environmental resources. With the latest approval, authorities are seeking to ensure that the spiritual grandeur of the event is matched by world-class sanitation and public health standards.

As preparations gather pace, the Rs115.61-crore initiative signals a broader effort to make Kumbh 2027 not only one of the largest gatherings of faith but also one of the cleanest and most efficiently managed in its history.
